Motorcycle lap timers and data loggers compared
SpeedAngle APEX, Starlane Stealth-5, AiM Solo 2, RaceBox Mini S and phone apps for track days: GPS rate, lean angle, software, prices and getting data off.
For track days, the dedicated bike units are the SpeedAngle APEX and Starlane Stealth-5, both with 10 Hz GPS and lean angle built in. The AiM Solo 2 records 25 Hz GPS and AiM sells bike mounting kits for it. A RaceBox Mini S or a phone app such as RaceChrono or Harry’s LapTimer costs less and shows lean angle from motion sensors.
Purple Sector doesn’t make lap timers. It opens files from several of them. Purple Sector has no commercial relationship with any brand on this page.

Which one suits me?
- You want a bike unit with lean angle built in and no phone: SpeedAngle APEX or Starlane Stealth-5, both made for motorcycles.
- You want the highest GPS rate and a logger you can also use in a car: AiM Solo 2. The Solo 2 DL adds ECU data over CAN, RS232 or K-Line.
- You’re starting out: a RaceBox Mini S with its free app, or RaceChrono Pro or Harry’s LapTimer on your phone, cost less. In RaceChrono, a phone using its own motion sensors needs to stay in a holder for the whole session.
- You analyse on a Mac: SpeedAngle’s R4 and AiM’s Race Studio 3 are Windows programs; Starlane’s MAAT has a Mac version; RaceBox’s app runs on Apple silicon Macs.
How is lean angle measured?
Lean angle is calculated. Units use motion sensors (accelerometers and gyros), and some apps can also estimate it from the GPS path alone: RaceChrono offers a GPS lean angle channel when no motion data is available. A bike in a steady corner leans so that gravity and the cornering force balance, which is why lean angle and lateral g rise and fall together.
When Purple Sector opens a file with a lean channel (SpeedAngle writes one in every row; other loggers call it Lean, Roll or Bank), it checks the readings against the GPS path before charting them as lean angle. The AI coach doesn’t use lean angle yet; it’s charted like any other channel.
What can a GPS lap timer tell a rider?
A GPS lap timer records lap and sector times, your speed through every corner and your line. Lean angle adds how far you leaned at each point. A GPS lap timer records position and speed, not your brake lever or throttle. See what GPS data can and cannot tell you and track day telemetry for beginners.
Questions
What is the best lap timer for motorcycle track days?
The SpeedAngle APEX and Starlane Stealth-5 are bike units with lean angle built in, at 10 Hz. The AiM Solo 2 records 25 Hz GPS and has bike kits. A RaceBox Mini S or a phone app costs less.
Which motorcycle lap timers show lean angle?
The SpeedAngle APEX (up to 69° each way), the Starlane Stealth-5, the RaceBox app with a RaceBox, RaceChrono and Harry’s LapTimer. AiM doesn’t name a lean channel for the Solo 2.
Can I use my phone as a motorcycle lap timer?
Yes. RaceChrono and Harry’s LapTimer time laps and show lean angle, with the phone fixed in a holder. An external receiver such as a RaceBox records GPS at up to 25 Hz.
Can I use a Garmin Catalyst on a motorcycle?
Garmin lists the Catalyst 2 as an automotive product, and its manual covers windscreen mounting and car audio pairing. It doesn’t describe a motorcycle installation.
How much is a SpeedAngle in Australia?
SpeedAngle sells the APEX direct for US$499, and an NZ dealer, CMG Motorcycles, lists it at $699. We didn’t find an Australian retailer price.
